April 1962 Popular Electronics Cover - RF CafeTable of Contents

Wax nostalgic about and learn from the history of early electronics. See articles from Popular Electronics, published October 1954 - April 1985. All copyrights are hereby acknowledged.

In the 1960s, Dave Harbaugh graced the pages of Popular Electronics magazine with many of his crazy cartoons that reflected some of the more extreme tendencies of electronics enthusiasts of the day. As was the case with many theme comics of the era, they often pitted a disinterested wife against the whims of an overzealous hobbyist husband. Home automation, music hall quality sound systems, televisions, space exploration, remote control of both animate and inanimate objects, and radio (amateur and short-wave listening) topped the list of subjects for these comics. As evidenced from the huge list below of pages of electronics- and science-related comics scanned from my vintage magazines will attest, they were quite popular. I took the liberty of colorizing the comics for you.

Hobnobbing with Harbaugh - I've Got News for You

By Dave Harbaugh

"It's from the FCC in Washington ... they're coming to visit"

"This is the last straw!!!"

"It's his latest fad, microminiaturization!"

"That's my ultra-sensitive infrared sprinkling system."
