Electronics Company Foreign Acquisitions Quiz
RF Cafe Quiz #84

RF Engineering Quizzes - RF Cafe WebsiteAll RF Cafe Quizzes make great fodder for employment interviews for technicians or engineers - particularly those who are fresh out of school or are relatively new to the work world. Come to think of it, they would make equally excellent study material for the same persons who are going to be interviewed for a job. Good luck!

Quiz #84: Electronics Company Foreign Acquisitions - RF Cafe WebsiteThe 20th Century American electronics industry produced some of the most influential companies in technological history, from the laboratories that invented the transistor to the factories that put televisions in every American home. Yet by the end of the century, many of these iconic names had passed into foreign ownership through a series of acquisitions driven by globalization, shifting competitive dynamics, and changing corporate strategies. Finnish, South Korean, French, Dutch, German, Chinese, Japanese, and other international buyers acquired what had once been pillars of American innovation. Bell Laboratories, RCA, Zenith, Magnavox, Sylvania, IBM's PC division, Motorola Mobility, Westinghouse's nuclear operations, Atari, and Fairchild Semiconductor all eventually found themselves under foreign control. Some of these transactions were friendly mergers, others were distressed sales, and a few represented the quiet end of an era for American technological dominance. This quiz tests your knowledge of which companies bought which American electronics giants, the home countries of the acquirers, and the circumstances surrounding these landmark deals. See how many of these historic ownership changes you can correctly identify.

1. Which foreign company acquired Bell Laboratories through its purchase of Alcatel-Lucent in 2016?

2. Zenith Electronics, a pioneer in television and radio technology, was acquired by which South Korean company in 1995?

3. RCA's consumer electronics division, famous for color television and the RCA connector, was sold to which French company in 1987?

4. Magnavox, known for consumer electronics and the first home video game console (Odyssey), was acquired by which Dutch company in 1974?

5. Sylvania, an American manufacturer of lighting products and electronic components, was acquired by which German company in 1993?

6. IBM's personal computer division, which launched the original IBM PC in 1981, was acquired by which Chinese company in 2005?

7. Motorola Mobility, responsible for the Razr flip phone and early Android smartphones, was acquired by which Chinese company in 2014?

8. Westinghouse Electric Company's nuclear energy division, a key supplier of reactor technology, was acquired by which Japanese company in 2006?

9. Atari, a pioneer in video games and home computers (Atari 2600, 800), was acquired by which French company in 2001?

10. Fairchild Semiconductor, one of the founding companies of Silicon Valley (the "traitorous eight"), was acquired by which company in 1979?

Quizzes from vintage electronics magazines (and many custom RF Cafe-generated quizzes) such as Popular Electronics, Electronics-World, QST, Radio-Electronics, and Radio News were published over the years - some really simple and others not so simple. Robert P. Balin created most of the quizzes for Popular Electronics. This is a listing of all I have posted thus far.
