Here is an amazing time-compressed animation of all the world's commercial air traffic as compiled by an effort by the Zurich University of Applied Sciences, NASA, Technorama, and FlightStats. Note the day/night region moving across the face of the Earth as you watch the air traffic patterns progress. One interesting phenomenon is the 5-point star that forms and the dissipates over Europe.
