Microwave Oven Clocks Causing Global Warming According to Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, all those electronic appliances you have around your home - supposedly on standby - are running up your energy bill more than you might expect. VCRs and DVDs typically draw 93% of their active power while "inactive." Answering machines and cordless phones consume 98% of their active power when not being used. Garage door openers and microwave ovens are even bigger energy users during off times, as calculated from the very small duty cycle of such appliances. LBNL estimates that about 6% of the typical residential electricity bill is to pay for items not being used. |
