Escalating the Performance of Escalators

Mitsubishi has designed a variable speed escalator that promises to ferry passengers from floor to floor at a rate 50% greater than that of current escalators, while still maintaining normal entry and exit speeds. The trick is using large diameter pulleys at the escalator's edges to force the rollers that support the steps to take wider turns, slowing them down. Look for them in about two years in shopping malls near you.
