RF Cafe University"Factoids," "Kirt's Cogitations," and "Tech Topics Smorgasbord" are all manifestations of my ranting on various subjects relevant (usually) to the overall RF Cafe theme. All may be accessed on these pages:

NAND Seems Logical

Flash NAND memory is striving for ubiquity. It is making appearances now in the form of USB drives (a portable 256 MB portable dongle that fits in your shirt pocket) and Flash cards for cameras, MP3 players, and cell phones, to name a few. The heir apparent to Flash NOR, NAND is currently 62x faster to erase and 17x faster to write than NOR. It uses 200x less power to erase and 60x less power to write. By stacking 4 die, the density is 4x greater than NOR, and the scalability (not applicable to NOR) promises much higher densities soon. Look for flash NAND to replace hard drives (no moving parts!) in notebook computers in the next 2 years, where battery life will be extended 3-4x. It's about time.
