Here at RF Cafe, we protect the computer and data storage with a whole-house surge protector with this SurgePro by GE. It is a pretty simple installation that also requires a 2-pole circuit breaker in the panel. Cheap peace-of-mind for $80 (+ $15 for the breaker). We also use surge protectors at all the duplex receptacles where electronics plug in.
