Why the border poll is gone... - RF Cafe Forums

The original RF Cafe Forums were shut down in late 2012 due to maintenance issues - primarily having to spend time purging garbage posts from the board. At some point I might start the RF Cafe Forums again if the phpBB software gets better at filtering spam.

Below are the old forum threads, including responses to the original posts.

-- Amateur Radio
-- Anecdotes, Gripes & Humor
-- Antennas
-- CAE, CAD, & Software
-- Circuits & Components
-- Employment & Interviews
-- Miscellany
-- Swap Shop
-- Systems
-- Test & Measurement
-- Webmaster

Greetings:

You might have noticed the poll that has been running the left border of the RF Cafe pages is gone now. The reason is related to why RF Cafe was off the air for a few hours on Saturday morning and again this morning.

Some nefarious POS figured out a way to hijack the main PHP file code parameters when submitting the voting form and took the liberty of installing a few files on the server for use in a phishing scheme. It was an attempt to redirect people intending to visit legitimate bank websites to a mirror site.

So, rather than try to figure out how to make it invulnerable, I decided to delete the poll altogether. From now on, I will revert back to using the poll thread on these RF Cafe Forums. I have not checked to see whether this newest version of the forum software allows voting without signing in. If it does, I will try to find modification code to remove the requirement.

Just though you might want to know. Every time this kind of thing occurs (I have had to deal with security breaches on the server before), I hearken gleefully back to that news story about the Russian spammer found dead in his apartment with a ball peen hammer lodged in his skull. :smt068
