what is limiter and its application - RF Cafe Forums

The original RF Cafe Forums were shut down in late 2012 due to maintenance issues - primarily having to spend time purging garbage posts from the board. At some point I might start the RF Cafe Forums again if the phpBB software gets better at filtering spam.

Recently my work involves so-called limiter. I am quite confused of its characteristics and application in the digital communication system(QPSK, etc). Can any expert give some hints?

There are two components you may be referring to.

One is a high power protection device using PIN diodes. The purpose is to clamp a high power signal to avoid damaging sensitive components on the front end of the receiver.

The other is a limiting amplifier, also referred to as a limiter. This is an amplifier operating in saturation, providing a fixed output level over a wide range of iput power.
