Attracting Customers Who Want to Thermal Testing

Attracting Customers Who Want to Perform Thermal Testing - RF CafeMeeting the required thermal testing requirements and performing it in less time is what TotalTemp Technologies offers. When a device is suited to testing on a thermal platform, that will always be our first recommendation. That is to say, the device has a fairly low profile and a flat thermally conductive surface. Fortunately, many electronic modules such as microwave modules and power amplifiers are already optimized for this configuration of test. Applying some thought to the process can make it more efficient. If a little bit of fixturing helps the device have a good thermally conductive surface, that will go a long way to facilitate faster testing. A secondary sensor on the device, especially if it is tall, can tell you when the point you actually care about has reached the required temperature. The optional Synergy Nano advanced temperature control algorithm can assure the fastest ramp to temperature and avoid excessive overshoot, which could damage parts. Keeping in mind how much more effective conductive heat transfer is, sometimes it just doesn't work for the device to be tested. In that case, a temperature chamber remains the best choice, TotalTemp is here to offer temperature chambers with fast, programmable transition rates and sufficient airflow to ensure good heat transfers to and from the device...

1st Complete Memristor-Based Bayesian Neural Network Implementation

1st Complete Memristor-Based Bayesian Neural Network Implementation - RF CafeConsidering medical-diagnosis and other safety-critical, sensory-processing applications that require accurate decisions based on a small amount of noisy input data, the study notes that while Bayesian neural networks excel at such tasks because they provide predictive uncertainty assessment, their probabilistic nature requires increased use of energy and computation. The increase is caused by the fact that implementing the networks in hardware requires a random number generator to store the probability distributions, i.e. synaptic weights. "Our paper presents, for the first time, a complete hardware implementation of a Bayesian neural network utilizing the intrinsic variability of memristors to store these probability distributions," said Elisa Vianello, CEA-Leti chief scientist. "We exploited the intrinsic variability of memristors to store these probability distributions, instead of using random number generators." A team comprising CEA-Leti, CEA-List and two CNRS laboratories...

How Much Power Is Enough When Selecting an AC Supply

Axiom Test Equipment Blog: How Much Power Is Enough When Selecting an AC Supply - RF CafeAxiom Test Equipment, an electronic test equipment rental and sales company has published a new blog post that covers how to find the right AC Power Supply with enough output power for each component, device, and system during testing. While precisely controlled AC electricity may not be needed when testing DUTs powered by DC power, an AC supply can help simulate real-world operating conditions. For certain DUTs, such as electric motors, a well-controlled AC power supply can mimic the conditions in which the DUT will operate, including power supply line fluctuations, peaks, and surges. AC power supplies can be compared by electrical capabilities, such as maximum root-mean-square (RMS) voltage, maximum RMS current, maximum frequency, and maximum power in volts-amperes (VA) at a given frequency. They can also be considered by physical attributes, such as the size and weight needed to fit an application. This is a glimpse of several AC power supplies having sufficient output power for feeding a wide range of DUTs...

Anatech November 2023 Newsletter

Anatech Electronics November 2023 Newsletter - RF CafeSam Benzacar of Anatech Electronics, an RF and microwave filter company, has published his November 2023 newsletter that, along with timely news items, features his short op−ed entitled "If Extraterrestrial Life is out There, We're Closer to Finding It." In it, Sam discusses the current state of the worldwide search for alien intelligent life. SETI has been around for as long as I remember - established November 11, 1984. That means SETI and related efforts have been at it for four decades, with no qualifying signals having ever been identified (which is not to say might have been received but not recognized). That is just a blip in time on a universal scale, so it is no reason to demur the effort. Astronomical equipment in all wavelengths - radio, microwave, mm-wave, infrared, visible, ultraviolet, x-ray - is advancing in sensitivity and speed at an extreme rate. Keep in mind that prior to the Hubbell Space Telescope, there was still a debate as to whether the entire sky, if examined closely enough, would be filled with celestial objects. Now, telescopes operating outside the optical range with fine resolution are detecting stars and galaxies hiding behind regions of interstellar gas that blocks light in the red-to-blue visual spectrum. A civilization would need to have been emitting electromagnetic signals for much longer a time than the 150 years or so of those originating from the Earth in order for the probability of something intercepting our position in the universe with enough power to detect...

Axiom Blog: Surveying EV and HEV Power Testing Solutions

Axiom Test Equipment Blog: Surveying EV and HEV Power Testing Solutions - RF CafeAxiom Test Equipment, an electronic test equipment rental and sales company has published a new blog post entitled "Surveying EV and HEV Power Testing Solutions" that covers how tunable power sources and wide-dynamic-range analyzers can examine electric power systems of EVs/HEVs. As more drivers adopt EVs and HEVs, they wonder about maintenance costs and routines compared to traditional motor vehicles with internal-combustion engines. HV battery systems in EVs and HEVs are among these vehicles' most important components since the greatest driving ranges are reached at their fullest charge capacities. They must be regularly tested to ascertain their status and capacities as part of a regular EV or HEV maintenance routine. Battery systems can be evaluated through voltage and power measurements, but additional test procedures can be helpful in monitoring the performance levels of these many additional "supporting" electronic components in EVs and HEVs...

Anatech Electronics October 2023 Newsletter

Anatech Electronics October 2023 Newsletter (Resurgence of the TWT) - RF CafeSam Benzacar of Anatech Electronics, an RF and microwave filter company, has published his October 2023 newsletter that features his short op−ed entitled "The Resurgence of the Traveling-Wave Tube." In it, Sam demonstrates an impressive knowledge of the state of the TWT industry. As is always the case with technology, the desire for greater functionality, lower cost, higher reliability, and small size and weight drive the research and development for fulfilling the need. Sometimes ideas are borne of fantastic fictional accounts of future scenarios, but most often it is the need to break through the barriers of existing science to achieve a goal. As the old saying goes, necessity is the mother of invention. Being a frequent surveyor of tech news sites, I read occasionally of TWT products and research, but I do not recall seeing where the efficiencies have nearly doubled over previous designs, so that was a surprise. Incremental advances in TWT research does not receive the same amount of print space as, say, photovoltaic semiconductors, which produce headlines whenever scientists manage to squeeze another 0.1% efficiency in the conversion of sunlight to electricity (in a laboratory environment). Per Sam's piece, the surging demand for traveling-wave tubes is being driven by the inability of semiconductors to provide power levels required for unique applications...

Axiom Blog: Essentials of DC Power Supplies & Loads

Axiom Test Equipment Blog: Essentials of DC Power Supplies & Loads - RF CafeAxiom Test Equipment, an electronic test equipment rental and sales company has published a new blog post that covers how important DC power supplies and loads are to control energy on the workbench and often serve as starting points for new product development. DC loads and power supplies work together to define the behavior of a device under test (DUT) in response to applied energy, not just in performance but in reliability and compatibility with other electronic devices. Power supplies are haunted (get it - Halloween coming?) by two forms of noise: normal-mode output noise and common-mode output noise. Normal-mode noise is generated by a power supply’s internal circuitry while common-mode noise is earth-referenced noise originating from the power line or source. On the other hand, DC loads help evaluate power conversion devices and systems, including power supplies and rechargeable batteries for electric vehicles (EVs). The simplest starting point when searching for a DC power supply is the amount of energy it supplies...

Numerous test equipment provides insights into fiber-optic cable quality, but one of the handiest and most versatile for the task is the optical spectrum analyzer (OSA). For the best results, fiber-optic cables should be measured before installation and tested as part of a regular maintenance schedule. An OSA measures and displays the distribution of light across a single wavelength or wavelength range. It can be used to explore how environmental effects, such as temperature, impact fiber-optic cable performance within its range, and how physical effects, such as bending or looping of cable, can affect performance. Evaluating the performance of fiber-optic cables requires a unit such as an OSA with the wavelength range to cover the bands and wavelengths used within any applications of interest...

Anatech Electronics August Newsletter

Anatech Electronics August 2023 Newsletter - RF CafeSam Benzacar of Anatech Electronics, an RF and microwave filter company, has published his August 2023 newsletter that features his short op−ed entitled "LMDS is Back as 5G Fixed Wireless Access." In it, Sam discusses how Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) is fundamentally a remake of the 1990s scheme called Local Multipoint Distribution Service (LMDS). I remember when it was considered a big deal, coming at the beginning of the wireless access era, concurrent with affordable cell phone service. LMDS was eventually abandoned due to technical difficulties (lack of sufficient range at available power levels), and then the bursting of the tech bubble in 1999 was the final blow. As always, Sam's knowledge of all facets of the communications industry is apparent, having been acquired first-hand as an active participant along the way...

TotalTemp VmSD49-N Thermal Vacuum Chamber

TVAC systems increase understanding of how components and materials respond in a space simulated environments Space simulation adds another dimension to thermal testing. In vacuum environments, heat is transferred by radiation or conduction since transfer by air currents (convection) is of course not possible without air. This is easily accomplished using thermal platforms in portable TVAC systems. As is the case with temperature chambers, space simulation systems are often sized considerably larger than required due to a lack of knowledge of what future requirements will be. This results in several inefficiencies. Portable space simulation equipment is cheaper to acquire Smaller systems don’t take up as much valuable lab space to use and to store when not in use...
