develop its own GPS-like radio navigation system, named Galileo. The $3 B U.S. program
is scheduled to be in full operation by 2008. Operating in the same frequency band
as GPS (U.S.) and GLONASS (Russia), it promises higher positional accuracy (a few
meters) - including data - without interference with existing systems. Galileo will
consist of 27 operational satellites and three orbiting spares in a 23,616 km orbit
inclined 56 degrees, and will be run by a consortium of European civil authorities. |
