Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the use of machines and software to mimic the thought processes of humans. A common definition of AI is "the study and design of intelligent agents" where said intelligent agent is a system that perceives itself as human in nature and makes decisions in accordance with behaviors of those who create it. John McCarthy coined the term "artificial intelligence" in 1956, where he defined it as "the science and engineering of making intelligent machines."
