Single board computers (SBC) have been around for a couple decades now. They are basically
a platform with all the functionality of a PC, only without the peripheral human I/O
devices. Often the computational speed and memory capacity are sized to be just enough
for the application, with a little buffer for expansion. Two great advantages are realized:
smaller size and lower cost. The nice thing is that usually there are human I/O device
(keyboard, mouse, display) ports are provided so that development can be done right on
the SBC platform.
