| Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASIC) Manufacturers & Services |
ASIC is pronounced "a-sick." IT is an integrated circuit that is custom designed for a specific application rather than a general-purpose IC such as a microprocessor. ASICs are used when an increase in performance is required compared to general-purpose microprocessors. ASICs are "hardwired" to do a specific job and do not incur the overhead of fetching and interpreting stored instructions. Some ASICs are programmed during the manufacturing process and cannot be readily reprogrammed - if at all. Other forms of ASICs are very customizable in the lab or production line. Advantages of of ASICs include smaller size, less support circuitry, lower power consumption, faster execution speeds, and sometimes lower cost.
