The RF and Microwave Systems Group in the Engineering Science and Technology Division (ESTD) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks to hire a software-defined radio (SDR) engineer for the creation, design, and development of a broad spectrum of SDR systems, i.e., RF and microwave radio systems that are software programmable, in support of ORNL’s Cognitive Radio Program. The candidate will join a team of researchers actively working on SDR and cognitive radio technologies.
Position: Software-Defined Radio (SDR) Engineer

Responsibilities & Qualifications:

  • Development of communication circuits and systems, especially at baseband and intermediate frequency (IF).
  • Programming field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and microprocessors.
  • Creation, design, prototype, test, and troubleshooting SDR and cognitive radio systems.
  • Development of communication waveforms at the physical and data link layers.
  • Work in teams with other BS/MS/Ph.D.-level engineers and physicists.

Must possess the potential for a high level of technical and interpersonal skills that will be sought after in Laboratory R&D teams.

We prefer an M.S. in electrical engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, with an emphasis in SDR and cognitive radio systems, including RF electronics design, RF modeling and simulation tools (MATLAB, SIMULINK, SYSGEN, RHAPSODY, etc.), communication systems (transmitters, receivers, antennas, filters, modulation techniques, etc.) and electromagnetic fields. Knowledge of the following programming languages is desirable: C/C++, VHDL, Fortran, Assembly, Java, Verilog, and UML/SysML. Hands-on experience in developing, prototyping, testing, and troubleshooting communication circuits is also desirable, as is a strong interest in organizing technical teams and developing new projects.

Other factors to be considered include excellent interpersonal skills, teamwork skills, communication skills (written and oral), and organizational skills; and interest and potential for leading technical teams and for managing technical projects. Candidates should be energetic, problem-solving individuals with excellent communication skills. This position does not currently require a clearance; however, the successful candidate must be capable of obtaining a DOE security clearance as future assignments dictate.
