I would like to thank you for your interest in helping us find two horn antennae (1 GHz to at least 6 GHz) for our senior project. Here is the information you requested in concise form. In case you would like a more detailed description of our project, I will email you a recent write-up of the project proposal.
Description:
This senior thesis discusses the implementation and development of a low cost surface penetrating radar using stepped frequency techniques to detect underground utility pipes. This write up describes the system specification of the radar, the adopted design procedures, the implementation of the radar, and measurements made to assess the performance of the radar. The system is integrated such that the receiver and transmitter form a single unit, referred to as the transceiver throughout this report. The radar operates by radiating electromagnetic energy through a transmitting antenna and detecting the echo returned from underground targets using a receiving antenna. The distance to the target is found from the time it takes the radiating energy to travel to the target and back. Data will be acquired using coherent detection techniques; and signal processing will be carried out by the control unit which is the intermediary unit between the transceiver and the display. The system will display an image of the target using a MATLAB imaging algorithm, and the approximate location and orientation of the target with respect to the radar.
Goal:
Detect underground pipes, give orientation and approximate location of the pipe and an image of the pipe will be displayed.
School & Course:
The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art 30 Cooper Square, New York , New York10003 EE162 and EE163: Electrical Engineering Senior Projects It is a two semester course for a total of 7 credits
Team Members:
Mamadou Lamine Dabo, Roy Thadathil and Philip Varghese
Reason for Choosing Topic:
It is challenging to build a radar from scratch without prior experience in radar design. We would like to build a low cost prototype with very cheap RF components.
Schedule:
fall 2004: we plan to finish the transceiver spring 2005: signal processing and testing.
Facilities & Equipment Available:
Electrical Engineering senior laboratory equipments such as function generators, scopes, computers, software, power suppliers. Microwave engineering lab, EE department machine shop and Civil Engineering Soil lab (will provide samples of soils for testing).
Donated Components Needed for Execution:
We need two horn antennae for transmitting and receiving. Specification: 1 GHz to at least 6 GHz
Possible Uses:
Construction companies, landmines detection, rebar inspection, possibly for medical research in the field of cancer.
