December 2, 2015 - EDI CON China is pleased to announce that Dr. Wai Chen, chief scientist and general manager of IoT at China Mobile, will be the chairman of EDI CON China 2016, taking place 19-21 April, 2016 in Beijing at the China National Convention Center (CNCC). Dr. Chen presented in the plenary session of EDI CON 2015 about IoT Services: "Opportunities and Challenges – A Perspective of a Mobile Operator." He will lead the plenary session in 2016 with an updated outlook from China Mobile and their latest activities in the area of IoT.
EDI CON 2015 highlighted many 5G technologies in the full day 5G Forum and in 2016 will add a technical track dedicated to IoT topics including low power device design, low power wide area networks, design automation/rapid prototyping/Industry 4.0, vehicle-to-vehicle communications/sensing, measurement/modeling challenges, solid-state energy applications and wireless charging/energy harvesting. EDI CON China is also working with its sponsors to bring special displays to the exhibition to demonstrate interesting IoT applications in the fields of transportation, medical, consumer and industrial automation. Dr. Wai Chen directs the research and development of Internet of Things (IoT) at China Mobile, where he is the chief scientist of China Mobile Research and the general manager of China Mobile’s Internet of Things Research Institute. The R&D efforts include IoT systems, platforms, and applications that include an IoT services platform, data analytics, cloud-assisted smart machines, cooperative ITS, and IoT communications chipset and devices. Prior to joining China Mobile, Dr. Chen was the vice president and group director of ASTRI, Hong Kong, and was the chief scientist and director of Applied Research at Bellcore/Telcordia Technologies, N.J. While at Bellcore/Telcordia, Dr. Chen was principal investigator for several government-funded (US DARPA, US ARL) projects on advanced networking research, and led a research program over 10 years (2000 – 2010) in collaboration with a major automaker on connected vehicles. Dr. Chen received his B.S. degree from Zhejiang University, and M.S., M.Phil., and Ph.D. degrees from Columbia University, N.Y.
