Linx TT Series Remote Control Transceiver Combines Simplicity, Low Power Consumption and Long Range Capability - RF CafeFebruary 14, 2014 - The new TT Series Remote Control Transceiver is designed for reliable bi-directional, long-range remote control applications. The module consists of a highly optimized Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS) RF transceiver and integrated remote control transcoder. The FHSS system allows higher power and therefore, longer range than narrowband radios, reaching over 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) line of site in typical environments with 0 dB gain antennas. Regulations in the country of operation dictate the maximum legal output power, so the final system range may be less depending on the country of operation.

An amplified version is available that increases the output power from 12.5 dBm to 23.5 dBm, boosting range to over 8 miles in line-of-sight environments with 0dB antennas. This version is available directly from Linx, so contact Linx for more details.

The TT Series transceiver features best-in-class receive sensitivity (up to −111 dBm) and low power consumption (only 19.2 mA in receive mode and 36 mA in transmit mode at 12.5dBm). The initial version operates in the 902 to 928 MHz frequency band for North and South America and an 868 version for the European market will be released soon. Housed in a compact reflow-compatible SMD package, the transceiver requires no external RF components except an antenna, which greatly simplifies integration and lowers assembly costs.

No programming is required for basic operation. Primary settings are hardware-selectable, which eliminates the need for an external microcontroller or other digital interface. Eight status lines can be set up in any combination of inputs and outputs for the transfer of button or contact states. A selectable acknowledgement indicates that the transmission was successfully received. For advanced features, optional software configuration is provided by a UART interface.

A simple and effective pairing operation configures two modules to operate together. A single button press on each side causes the modules to automatically swap their 32-bit addresses and store them in non-volatile memory. It can be configured to automatically send an acknowledgement to the transmitting unit either after receiving a command or with external circuitry when an action has taken place. An external processor, if used, can send two bytes of data, such as sensor values or voltage levels, with the acknowledgement.

Thanks to low power consumption, the module is optimized for battery-powered applications. As a result of combining superior performance with low power consumption, common applications include agricultural controls, home and industrial automation, robotics, remote sensing and control, electronic message displays and scoreboards and many others. The TT Series transceiver has obtained modular approval for the United States and Canada.

To aid rapid development, the TT Series transceiver is available as part of a master development system. The system comes with two development boards for benchmarking and prototyping, each of which is populated with a transceiver, along with two remote control development boards and programming boards. These boards include lights that show you which areas are active as well as other enhancements that simplify the development experience. The remote boards include LED’s that indicate connection and acknowledgment to aid in the development capability. To help you get started, the system also includes antennas, a daughter board with a USB interface, demonstration software, extra modules and connectors.
