1879: Frank Jewett, the first president of Bell Telephone Labs, was born. 1885: The first gasoline pump was delivered to a gasoline dealer in Ft Wayne, IN. 1906: Ludwig Boltzmann, after whom the Boltzmann constant (1.3806505 × 10-23 J/K) was named, died. 1914: Babe Ruth hit his first home run as a professional player in the International League. 1948: Richard Tolman, who demonstrated electrons to be charge-carrying particles in flow of electricity in metals, died. 1953: The first privately operated atomic reactor opened at the NC State School of Engineering in Raleigh, NC. 1972: Muslim guerrillas attacked the Israeli delegation at Munich Olympic games, killing 11 members of the Israeli Olympic team. 1977: The "Voyager 1" spacecraft was launched two weeks after launching its twin, "Voyager 2." 1984: The space shuttle Discovery landed after its maiden voyage. 1995: France conducted an underground nuclear test at the Mururoa Atoll. 1997: Mother Teresa died in Calcutta.
