1789: The War Department established a regular army. 1901: Nobel Prize winning physicist Enrico Fermi was born. 1858: Rudolf Diesel, German thermal engineer who invented the internal-combustion engine that bears his name, died. 1901: Italian-born Nobel physicist Enrico Fermi was born. 1914: A patent for a "Phonograph Record" was granted to Thomas Edison. 1915: The first transcontinental radio telephone demonstration was given in New York City, where speech was transmitted via Arlington, VA to Mare Island at San Francisco, CA. 1925: Aerovironment founder Paul MacCready, designer of the Gossamer series of human and solar powered aircraft, was born. 1946: "The Adventures of Sam Spade" debuted on CBS Radio. 1950: General MacArthur's troops liberated Seoul, South Korea. 1990: The California Air Resources Board adopted the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate requiring 2% of vehicles beginning in 1998 (rising to 5% in 2001, 10% in 2003) must have no exhaust emissions.
