1486: The first known copyright was issued in Venice. 1859: A solar flare (Carrington's Flare)was observed for the first time by astronomer Richard Carrington. 1865: Joseph Lister (think Listerine) performed the first antiseptic surgery. In 1878, Emma Nutt became the first female telephone operator in the U.S. 1939: World War II began when Germany invaded Poland. 1953: The first aerial refueling of a jet aircraft by a jet tanker is made with a B-47 Stratojet by a KB-47B tanker. 1961: The Soviet Union ended a moratorium on atomic bomb testing. 1979: Pioneer 11 became the first spacecraft to visit Saturn. 1997: The discovery of a new sub-atomic particle was announced, called the exotic meson. 1998: Mark McGwire of the St. Louis Cardinals hit his 56th and 57th home runs, breaking the one-season record set by Hack Wilson in 1930.
