1813: Pioneer watchmaker Edward Howard was born. 1846: George Westinghouse, founder of Westinghouse Electric Company and inventor of railway braking systems, was born. 1868: A patent for nickel plating was awarded to William Remington. 1903: Nobel Prize winner Ernest Walton, co-inventor of the first nuclear particle accelerator, was born. 1923: Edwin Hubble identified the first Cepheid variable star. 1942: Electric photography (xerography or photocopying) patent was received in by Chester Carlson. 1951: W(ill) K(eith) Kellogg, founder of the Kellogg cereal company, died. 1966: Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) was declared illegal in the U.S. 1973: Egypt and Syria launched an attack against Israel, starting the Yom Kippur War. 1995: Astronomers at the Geneva Observatory in Switzerland announced the first  ever discovery of a planet orbiting the solar-type star, 51 Pegasi.
