1867: Nobel Prize-winning chemist Marie Marja Sklodowska Curie, discoverer of radium and polonium, was born. 1874: Thomas Nast was the first to portray the Republican elephant. 1885: The spike was driven for the Canadian Pacific Railway, that finally linked the Atlantic and Pacific. 1940: The Tacoma Narrows Bridge (Galloping Gertie) collapsed in Washington state. 1985: NASA launched Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) spacecraft. 1997: Chinese engineers completed the blocking of the Yangtze River, the first step toward what will be the world's largest hydroelectric dam project (Three Gorges Dam).
