1815: English mathematician George Boole, of Boolean algebra fame, died (Boole). 1885: American astronomer Harlow Shapley, who discovered the sun's position in the Milky Way galaxy, was born. 1920: Pittsburgh radio station KDKA was the first to broadcast presidential election results (between Warren Harding and James Cox - Harding won). 1936: BBC Television Service inaugurated the world's first regular, public, high-definition television broadcasting system. 1942: The first controlled nuclear chain reaction was demonstrated at the University of Chicago. 1947: Howard Hughes flew his huge wooden airplane, the Spruce Goose, on its only flight, which lasted about a minute. 1982: Barney Clark had the world's first artificial heart transplant. 1988: Robert Morris released what is considered to be the first successful worm (Morris Worm) or Internet. 1992: The Airbus A330 first flew. 2000: An American astronaut and two Russian cosmonauts became the first permanent residents of the International Space Station.
