1919: A solar eclipse permitted observation of the bending of starlight passing through the sun's gravitational field, thereby confirming Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity. 1929: Englishman Peter Higgs, of the Higgs boson fame, was born. 1943: Norman Rockwell's portrait of "Rosie the Riveter" appeared on the cover of "The Saturday Evening Post." 1953: Mount Everest was conquered as Edmund Hillary of New Zealand, and Tensing Norgay of Nepal became the first climbers to reach the summit. 1999: The space shuttle Discovery completed the first-ever docking with the International Space Station.
