Herschel, was born. 1809: Jean-Pierre-François Blanchard, who was the first to fly across the English Channel (in a balloon), died. 1876: Alexander Graham Bell received a patent (#174,464) for his telephone. 1926: The first successful trans-Atlantic radio-telephone conversation took place, between New York City and London. 1933: The board game Monopoly was invented. 1936: Adolf Hitler ordered his troops to march into the Rhineland, breaking the Treaty of Versailles and the Locarno Pact. 1996: The first surfaces of Pluto were obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope.
