1932: The first radio broadcast from a moving train was made by WABC. 1958: Elvis Presley joined the army. 1959: The maser (Microwave Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation) was patented by Charles Townes. 1962: Danish physicist Auguste Piccard, who pioneered high altitude balloon and deep sea vehicle research, died. 1965: Millions watched a first-ever 15-minute live broadcast of the Ranger 9 moon crashing into the moon. 1989: The Exxon Valdez oil tanker struck a reef in Alaska's Prince William Sound and spilled 240,000 barrels of crude oil. 1992: The first Belgian astronaut, Dirk Frimout, went into space onboard the Atlantis Space Shuttle.
