1784: Jean Blanchard made his first successful ascent in a balloon he built himself. 1861: The Patent Act of 1861 increased term of a patent grant from 14 to 17 years (now it is 20 years). 1902: Edward Condon, of radar development and Franck-Condon fame, was born. 1904: Theodor Seuss Geisel, aka "Dr. Seuss," was born. 1949: Captain James Gallagher and his 13-man US Air Force crew completed the first around-the-world non-stop flight in 94 hours in a B-50 Superfortress, the "Lucky Lady II." 1969: The Concorde supersonic aircraft made its first flight. 1972: U.S. spacecraft Pioneer 10 was launched and became the first man-made object to leave the solar system. 1995: Yahoo! was incorporated. 2002: Operation Anaconda began in Afghanistan.
