1761: Henry Shrapnel, inventor of the Shrapnel Shell which exploded in the air, was born. 1864: Ransom Olds, founder of Oldsmobile, was born. 1902: Thomas Edison received a patent for a Reversible Galvanic Battery. 1942: The 4-day long Battle of Midway, which was the turning-point in the PTO, began. 1948: The 200-inch Hale reflector telescope at the Palomar Mountain Observatory in CA was dedicated. 1959: The first class graduated from the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO. 1965: Astronaut Edward White became the first American to "walk" in space, during the flight of Gemini 4. 1970: Emmett Culligan, founder of the "Hey Culligan Man" company, died. 1989: Chinese army troops began a sweep of Beijing to crush student-led pro-democracy demonstrations (stay tuned tomorrow). 1990: Robert Noyce, co-inventor of the integrated circuit and nicknamed "the Mayor of Silicon Valley", died.
