1862: Nobel laureate Sir William Bragg, after whom Bragg's Law of diffraction is named, was born. 1900: The first Zeppelin flight (LZ1) occurred over Lake Constance, Germany. 1926: The U.S. Congress established the Army Air Corps. 1934: Aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart disappeared in the Central Pacific during an attempt to fly around the world at the equator. 1962: The first Wal-Mart store opened for business in Rogers, AR. 1979: The first U.S. coin to honor a woman, the Susan B. Anthony dollar, was introduced. 1980: President Jimmy Carter reinstated draft registration (selective service) for males 18 years of age. 1982: Larry Walters using a lawn chair hoisted by 42 helium-filled weather balloons, rose to 16,000 feet after taking off from San Pedro, CA. 1997: Actor Jimmy Stewart, film star ("It's a Wonderful Life") and WWII bomber pilot, died. 2002: Steve Fossett became the first person to fly solo around the world nonstop in a balloon.
