0066: The 5th recorded perihelion passage of Halley's Comet occurred. 1875: George Green patented what is essentially the modern electric dental drill for sawing, filing, dressing and polishing teeth. 1886: Karl Benz patented the first auto powered by an internal combustion engine. 1891: Nikolaus Otto, developer of the 4-cycle internal combustion engine, died. 1911: Nobel physicist Polykarp Kusch, who determined that the magnetic moment of the electron is greater than its theoretical value, was born. 1911: Glenn Curtiss piloted the first successful seaplane in San Diego. 1921: Sony co-founder Akio Morita was born. 1942: The first U.S. force in Europe during WW II went ashore in Northern Ireland.
