1849: English-born Elizabeth Blackwell became the first woman in America to receive a medical degree. 1862: German mathematician David Hilbert, of Hilbert Transform fame, was born. 1930: Clyde Tombaugh first photographed the planet Pluto. 1950: Jerusalem became the official capital of Israel. 1960: The U.S. Navy bathyscaphe Trieste descended to a record depth of 35,820 feet (10,750 meters) in the Mariana Trench, in the Pacific Ocean. 1964: The first animal to human heart transplant was made. 1983: The A-Team ("Pity the Fool") debuted on NBC. 1996: Java 1.0 was released with the promise of being a Write Once Run Anywhere (WORA) programming language.
