1790: The U.S. patent system was established. 1849: Walter Hunt patented the safety pin. 1863: Paul-Louis-Toussaint Héroult, inventor of the electric arc furnace, was born. 1900: Arnold Beckman, founder of Beckman Instruments, was born. 1912: The luxury liner Titanic set sail from Southampton, England, on its ill-fated maiden voyage. 1930: The first synthetic rubber was produced. 1936: The 200" mirror arrived in Pasadena, CA, for Palomar Observatory's Hale Telescope. 1984: The damaged Solar Max satellite was snared by the Challenger space shuttle.
