Job Description

This position is responsible for development of advanced power amplifier products. This includes device characterization, PA design and characterization, prototype development, system testing, demonstrations, characterization, production support. The candidate will interact with other essential disciplines including Substrate Design, Marketing, Process Technology Development, Modeling, Test Engineering and Manufacturing.

Roles & Responsibilities

This position has responsibility for:

  • Design, layout and characterization of multistage linear power amplifier integrated circuits and matching networks.
  • Small signal analysis of gain and stability empirically and through design.
  • Work with substrate and package engineers to maximize product performance.
  • Simulation of active and passive RF networks in Cadence (SpectreRF) and/or ADS.

Knowledge, Skill and Competency Requirements

Competency is based on: education, training, skills and experience. In order to perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and competencies:

  • Knowledge of
    • RF fundamentals, Smith chart, impedance matching, power transfer, stability analysis.
    • Various competitive PA devices technologies.
    • PA distortion effects, memory effects, characterization, and modeling.
    • Device limits of operation and safe operating region.
    • PA impedance matching topologies.
    • IC packaging and module design techniques.
    • Analog and RF IC Design (CMOS preferred).
    • Load pull tests and ability to interpret results.
  • Ability to run circuit simulations in Cadence and ADS (must know at least one at the start).
  • Ability to design a PA from requirements through prototype, including circuit planning, design, fabrication, testing and productization.
  • Ability to floor plan analog, digital and RF blocks on an IC.
  • Proficiency in Design of Experiments.
  • Data driven and analytical, strive to correlate simulations to measurements.
  • Proficiency in RF Lab measurement and calibration techniques.
  • Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Working knowledge of Matlab.

The following traits are highly valued:

  • Knowledge of
    • Device reliability mechanisms.
    • PA impedance matching topologies.
    • Transmitter system architectures and requirements.
    • PA linearization or efficiency enhancement techniques.
    • 3GPP standards (GSM/EDGE, WCDMA/HSPA or LTE, one required).
  • Experience shipping high volume RF products.
  • Ability to design PA bias circuits.
  • CMOS PA design experience.
  • Knowledge of HFSS or Momentum.
  • Ability to innovate new circuits and architectures.
  • Working knowledge of LabView or CVI for lab automation.
  • Working knowledge of JMP or DataPower for data analysis.

Education and Experience:

  • BS in Electrical Engineering required, MSEE desired.
  • 3+ years experience in RF circuit design.
