in MMIC design after my MS for the past 6 months, mostly in X and Ku
bands. I am being offered a board-level RF design position for GSM/CDMA
in another company. Is is wise to switch? What are the long term prospects?
Thanks. Top Profile Itay Post subject:
Unread postPosted: Thu Nov 04, 2004 10:21 pm Greetings,
I don't think that it is worth switching to a board level design
position, simply because it is more challenging and exciting to do a
MMIC/RFIC design. Moreover, in the long term, the RF design is heading
more to the chip level rather than to the board level. Another issue
is that many times the MMIC/RFIC designer is greatly involved in board
level design for the IC he designed - the evaluation board. So it is
worth sticking to your current position. I know that because I am doing
board design for few years and am looking the opportunity to move to
your side. Good luck ;-) Itay Top

pm Posts: 7 Hello Italy, Thanks a lot. I appreciate your
advice. It is quite a change coming from school where you get exposure
to a wide variety of topics to, pretty much working on a single chip,
for 3-4 months. I was thinking that doing a board level design might
provide more variety. Top Profile Itay

Greetings, You are welcome. Board level design
does provide a variety and includes many activities from link budget,
through block implementation, simulation, PCB layout, assembly, testing,
integration and additional activities. Yet if you get to think of that,
this is the same with MMIC/RFIC design only in the chip scale.
But I stick to what I said that you started from a higher point,
because RFIC/MMIC is a higher point than board level design. And I am
sure that in the future you will "get down" to board level as well,
as part of your design process. And no, I don't think that the
grass is more grean at the neighbour's yard, trust me on that... :!:
Good luck, Itay Top Guest Post subject:
