Capacitor package - RF Cafe Forums
Because of the high maintenance needed to monitor and filter spammers from the RF Cafe Forums, I decided that it would be best to just archive the pages to make all the good information posted in the past available for review. It is unfortunate that the scumbags of the world ruin an otherwise useful venue for people wanting to exchanged useful ideas and views. It seems that the more formal social media like Facebook pretty much dominate this kind of venue anymore anyway, so if you would like to post something on RF Cafe's Facebook page, please do.

hello!
can any one explain how do we select different capacitor packages (0603,0805 etc) if power to be delivered is 20w,40w,100w etc. I understand their inductive effect but want to know about the effect of ESR and hence power dissipation.

As bigger is the package as higher is the ESR value.

100W equates to 100V, so you best check the maximum voltage for the capacitor, it should be at least 150V to 200V.

In general as larger the package as higher is the operating voltage, this is true both for ceramic capacitors and for tantalum capacitors. This is because the distance between the capacitor's plate is larger and it can withstand larger brekdown voltage. Always consult the data sheet of the specific capcitor you intend to use, it will provide you with the exact information. Also a good practice for capacitors is to avoid working above 60% of the maximal voltage rating.
