Rectangular patch antenna design - RF Cafe Forums

RF Cafe Forums closed its virtual doors in late 2012 mainly due to other social media platforms dominating public commenting venues. RF Cafe Forums began sometime around August of 2003 and was quite well-attended for many years. By 2012, Facebook and Twitter were overwhelmingly dominating online personal interaction, and RF Cafe Forums activity dropped off precipitously. Regardless, there are still lots of great posts in the archive that ware worth looking at. Below are the old forum threads, including responses to the original posts. Hi,

I'm in the process of designing a simple microstrip rectangular patch antenna. I intend to feed the structure by using a co-axial wire inserted through a hole in the ground plane, and substrate. I understand that the (0,1) and (0,3) modes of a rectangular patch resonator both exhibit broadside radiation and the same polarization. But what exactly is meant by (0,1) etc.? Also I presume that one can only excite these two modes if the antenna is dimensioned correctly and fed in the correct location. Could anyone elaborate on what is required?

I have found a formula than can be used to determine dimension L. But didn't find such formula for W. I understand that W must be less than a wavelength in the substrate material, in order to avoid the excitation of higher order modes. Aside from this limitation can/should one dimension W arbitrarily? Several of the rectangular patches in the literature seem to have a L/W ratio of about 0.75, is there a reason for that?

Thanks

For anyone who's interested in this I found answers to my questions in a really well written tutorial on the RF globalnet site.

Hi jrk

Thanks for that.

I tried to put a reply together based on articles I have culled from various tech pubs, but the guys writing the papers just wanted to goof off sprinkling bessel integrals all over the place, which wasn't much use to answer your very apposite question.

I have often needed design curves for various patches such as dual frequency, various bandwidths etc but never could find a straight forward kitchen sink treatment.

Thanks again
