3-6 GHz Dipole antennas - RF Cafe Forums

Because of the high maintenance needed to monitor and filter spammers from the RF Cafe Forums, I decided that it would be best to just archive the pages to make all the good information posted in the past available for review. It is unfortunate that the scumbags of the world ruin an otherwise useful venue for people wanting to exchanged useful ideas and views. It seems that the more formal social media like Facebook pretty much dominate this kind of venue anymore anyway, so if you would like to post something on RF Cafe's Facebook page, please do.

Does anyone know where I could find one or more 1/2 wave dipoles that would cover the frequency range from 3 GHz to 6 GHz?

the term for what you are looking for is "a discone" so try a search engine for that.
If I needed something quickly, I would take a length of 10mm copper pipe cut as half wavelength for 4.5 GHz (35 mm length) then feed it parasitically through a parallel strip of copper, 20mm long, spaced about 2 or 3mm away. To do this use semi-rigid coax running inside one arm of the 35mm tube and out through a small clearance hole about 10 mm from the center line. The outer of the coax is soldered to the 10mm diam pipe at the hole, and the inner goes to the end of the copper strip. The other end of the copper strip (transformer) is bent down as a small tab capacitor near to the 10mm diam dipole. This should cover an octave bandwidth with a fairly good S11

If you are not particular about the type of antenna (i.e, dipole), you will find a ton of designs for ultrawideband antennas which will cover that bandwidth. Different designs will have different gains/ radiation patterns in that bandwidth though..
