2.4GHz patch antenna - RF Cafe Forums
Because of the high maintenance needed to monitor and filter spammers from the RF Cafe Forums, I decided that it would be best to just archive the pages to make all the good information posted in the past available for review. It is unfortunate that the scumbags of the world ruin an otherwise useful venue for people wanting to exchanged useful ideas and views. Hello,

I'm trying to design a patch antenna for 2.4GHz and I get a 2-3% band width only, does anyone know a way to make the BW bigger?
It should be easy to get 5% of BW but I just don't get it in my simulations.
I use IE3D.

I think for a typical patch antenna, you will get about 5% bandwidth if you use the substrate thickness of 5% of the wavelength. If you want to get wider bandwidth without increasing the substrate, which may increase surface wave, you may want to consider stacked patch, aperture coupled patch etc.

I used a 125mil substrate with er=2.2 and a typical patch as you get from the basic equations (BALANIS for example).

do you know of a rule of thumb that gives you the relationship between the thickness and the BW?

From my experience, for a typical patch antenna with any funcy staff (slot, vias etc), I think the bandwidth is about 1% when the substrate thickness is about 1% of the waveguide wavelength. It is a rough estimation.

In the book "Microstrip Antenna Design Handbook" by Bhartia, et.al., figure 9.1 is a plot of %BW vs. substrate thickness and dielectric constant. It only has plots for epsilon of 2.2 and 10, but it can be interpolated rather easily. I've used this chart many times and it gives a pretty good estimate of BW prior to doing the actual design and measurement.

The book is available on Amazon and really is a must have for anyone doing a lot of microstrip patch designs.
