| | Looking for advice to get started - RF Cafe Forums |
Because of the high maintenance needed to monitor and filter spammers from the RF Cafe Forums, I decided that it would
be best to just archive the pages to make all the good information posted in the past available for review. It is unfortunate
that the scumbags of the world ruin an otherwise useful venue for people wanting to exchanged useful ideas and views.
It seems that the more formal social media like Facebook pretty much dominate this kind of venue anymore anyway, so if
you would like to post something on RF Cafe's
Facebook page, please do.

I'm in Florida in the Cape Canaveral area and am considering getting my Ham license. I've been in electronics for about a million years but never did get a license - just too darn busy (that's my excuse and I'm sticking with it). Anyway, I know there are scads of books and online about how to get started, but there seems to be a lot of Hams here at RF Cafe forums, so what do you suggest?
On a related note, do you think eliminating Mmorse Code requirement has been a good way to attract new Amateurs?

Location: London UK | The rules in the States are I am sure different from over the pond here in UK.
But a universal starter is to find your closest local amateur radio club. There must be a slew of them in Florida. They will steer you towards courses running to pass the FCC exams.
Contact the ARRL if you draw a blank through local sources.

Posts: 2 | Hello FL Techie, I too am from Brevard, Palm Bay, and my call is WB4VAM. I belong to PCARS (Platinum Coast Amateur Radio Club), and we meet at the Salvation Army building in Melbourme. It is next to Holmes Regional Medical Center. We meet every 2nd monday of each month and would look forward to seeing you. Oh, and sorry, the name here is Dave. There are many avenues to obtain your license, and we (PCARS) give the exams also. We have a few members from Canaveral, but if that is too long of a drive for you, there is a club in Merrit Island called the Indian River Amateur Radio Club (IRARC). My wifes father is a member of that one. Our website is pcars.org and feel free to look at it. Arrl.org and qrz.com are some goo website to go for newcomer info, and the qrz website even has practice tests.
