Kirt Blattenberger - RF Cafe WebmasterCopyright
1996 - 2016
Kirt Blattenberger,

RF Cafe began life in 1996 as "RF Tools" in an AOL screen name web space totaling 2 MB. Its primary purpose was to provide me with ready access to commonly needed formulas and reference material while performing my work as an RF system and circuit design engineer. The Internet was still largely an unknown entity at the time and not much was available in the form of WYSIWYG ...

Artech HouseCambridge University PressEach week, I select a new book that is relevant to engineers, scientists, students, hobbyists or managers. Most of the time they are sold through Amazon (I earn a few pennies on each sale), but when possible, I present books that are available in an e-book format that can be downloaded for free. The latter are much less available. After all, most people like to be paid for their work, as I'm certain that you do, too.

Note: I just began archiving these picks in May of 2009, but they have been going on since about 2003.

Make Your Own Tube Testers and Electron Tube Equipment - RF Cafe"Make Your Own Tube Testers and Electron Tube Equipment," by Gary Steinbaugh, PE, AF8L, shows audio connoisseurs and amateur radio enthusiasts how to construct and use their own vacuum tube testers. In addition, it describes how to make electron tube equipment, how to design high voltage supplies, how to work with metal, plastic, and glass, and more. The reader can make a shiny new tube tester that produces laboratory-quality results for a fraction of the price of a worn-out vintage tube tester.

How to Win Friends & Influence People - RF CafeThe 7 Habits of Highly Effective People - RF CafeHere are a couple oldies but goodies. Sage advice is timeless, it is said, and the fact that these two books are still top sellers speaks truth to the adage. How to Win Friends and Influence People is an oft-cited book (usually by people that have never read it) written by tycoon Dale Carnegie. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, by Stephen R. Covey is the other book you might consider reading. I must confess that they really haven't helped me too much, but that's a Kirt problem <:(  Enjoy.

Cognitive Radio: Interoperability Through Waveform Reconfiguration

Cognitive Radio: Interoperability Through Waveform Reconfiguration - RF CafeCognitive Radio: Interoperability Through Waveform Reconfiguration, by Leszek Lechowicz and Mieczyslaw M. Kokar. In the span of a century, radio technology advanced from spark transmitters, through analog radios based on vacuum tubes to solid state radios to finally software defined radios where most of the transmit and receive functionalities are implemented as programs running on specialized microprocessors. In recent years, cognitive radio emerged, which combines a software-defined ...

Readers are provided with details of threats in three major areas - Communications, Radars, and IR Threats. Market Engineers and managers responsible for designing or evaluating communications electronic warfare ...

Antenna Physics: An Introduction: Delve Deeper into Antenna Theory

Antenna Physics: An Introduction - RF CafeAntenna Physics: An Introduction is written to bridge the gap between basic theory and graduate-level engineering texts. Robert J. Zavrel, Jr, W7SX, well-known author and professional antenna engineer, explains many of the underlying principles of antennas and antenna physics and introduces the mathematics behind these principles. Radio amateurs are familiar with antennas and use them every day to communicate on the air. We know how long to make a dipole or vertical antenna for a particular frequency, but do we know how the antenna really works? Note that this is not a book of "how-to" projects, but rather a theoretical and mathematical approach to the topic ...

Transmit Receive Modules for Radar and Communication Systems

Transmit Receive Modules for Radar and Communication Systems - RF CafeThe use of electronically scanned phased arrays is increasing in systems such as radar, wireless networks, and satellite ground terminals. An important and necessary component for these systems is the transmit receive (T/R) module, which provides the amplification and electronic beam steering that is required for proper function. This new resource presents a comprehensive overview of all design, fabrication, integration, and implementation issues associated with T/R modules for radar and communications. This book provides engineers and researchers with practical designs and 44 examples of analysis, circuits, and components ...

How to Live with an Engineer

How to Live with an Engineer - RF CafeHow to Live with an Engineer, by Camille Minichino Ph.D. If you are visiting RF Cafe, somebody you know can probably use this book ;-) "It's hard to escape the techies that surround us, both at work and at home. We wouldn't want to live without them: They're immensely helpful in this high-tech world, but when it comes to social and personal interactions, engineers' skills and training often work against them. How to Live with an Engineer is a blueprint for understanding and dealing with the slightly peculiar traits of the techies we can't live without ..."

Wizard: The Life and Times of Nikola Tesla - Biography of a Genius

Wizard: The Life and Times of Nikola Tesla - Biography of a Genius - RF Cafe"Seifer's vivid, revelatory, exhaustively researched biography rescues pioneer inventor Nikola Tesla from cult status and restores him to his rightful place as a principal architect of the modern age. Based largely on firsthand documents including Tesla's writings, his patents and those of competitors, it credits the Croatian-born Serb, who moved to New York in 1884, with the invention of the induction motor, long-distance electrical power distribution, fluorescent and neon lights, the first true radio tube and remote control, besides making vital contributions to the technology underlying television, wireless communication, robotics, lasers, the facsimile machine and particle-beam weaponry anticipating the space-based "Star Wars" defensive shield. Though often depicted as a recluse, flamboyant nouveau-riche Tesla ..."
