About RF Cafe

RF Cafe began life in 1996 as "RF Tools" in an AOL screen name web space totaling 2 MB. Its primary purpose was to provide me with ready access to commonly needed formulas and reference material while performing my work as an RF system and circuit design engineer. The Internet was still largely an unknown entity at the time and not much was available in the form of WYSIWYG ...

Each week, I select a new book that is relevant to engineers, scientists, students, hobbyists or managers. Most of the time they are sold through Amazon (I earn a few pennies on each sale), but when possible, I present books that are available in an e-book format that can be downloaded for free. The latter are much less available. After all, most people like to be paid for their work, as I'm certain that you do, too.
Note: I just began archiving these picks in May of 2009, but they have been going on since about 2003.
Featured Book: Behavioral
Modeling and Linearization of RF Power Amplifiers, by John Wood. Wireless voice and data communications have
made great improvements, with connectivity now virtually ubiquitous. Users are demanding essentially perfect transmission
and reception of voice and data. The infrastructure that supports this wide connectivity and nearly error-free
delivery of information is complex, costly, and continually being improved. This resource describes the mathematical
methods and practical implementations of linearization techniques for RF power amplifiers...
Filters for Everyone, by Rusty Allred. Performing such functions as noise mitigation and signal conditioning,
digital filters are everywhere: in your car, in your TV, in your music player, in your phone, everywhere. But
an engineering degree or expensive software is not required to design and analyze them. In fact, whoever you are
and whatever your background, this book will help you understand,
design, analyze and use digital filters. This book was written to make digital filters more accessible to
everyone. Practicing engineers will appreciate its straightforward approach...
Characterization, Modeling, and Design of Nonlinear RF and Microwave Components, by David E. Root, Jan Verspecht,
Jason Horn. This is the definitive guide to X-parameters, written by the original inventors and developers of
this powerful new paradigm for nonlinear RF and microwave components and systems. Learn how to use X-parameters
to overcome intricate problems in nonlinear RF and microwave engineering. The general theory behind X-parameters
is carefully and intuitively introduced, and then simplified down...
Featured Book: EW Receivers
Warfare Receivers and Receiving Systems, by Richard A. Poisel. Receivers systems are considered the core of
electronic warfare (EW) intercept systems. Without them, the fundamental purpose
of such systems is null and void. This book considers the major elements that make up receiver systems and the
receivers that go in them. This resource provides system design engineers with techniques for design and development
of EW receivers for modern modulations in addition to receivers for older, common modulation formats. Each major
module in these receivers is considered in detail...
Featured Book: Highly
Low-Power Radars, by Sergio Saponara, Maria Greco, and Egidio Ragonese. In recent years, advances in radio
detection and ranging technology, sustained by new achievements in the fields of signal processing and electronic
components, have permitted the adoption of radars in many civil and defense applications. This resource discusses
how highly integrated radar has been adopted by several new markets such as contactless vital sign monitoring
or harbor traffic control, as well...
Engineering Fundamentals: An Introduction to Engineering, by Saeed Moaveni. Specifically designed as an introduction to the exciting world of engineering, the book encourages students to become engineers and prepares them with a solid foundation in the fundamental principles and physical laws. The book begins with a discovery of what engineers do as well as an inside look into the various areas of specialization. An explanation on good study habits and what it takes to succeed is included as well as an introduction to design and problem solving, communication, and ethics. Once this foundation is established, the book moves on to the basic physical concepts and laws...
for Engineers: Evaluation and Funding of Capital Projects, by Frank Crundwell. I saw this book over on the
EE Times website and figured it would be a good subject for my Featured Book spot. With flair and an originality
of approach, Crundwell brings his considerable experience to bear on this crucial topic. Uniquely, this book discusses
the technical and financial aspects of decision-making in engineering and demonstrates these through case studies.
It's a hugely important matter as, of course, engineering solutions and financial decisions...

Satellite Communication Ground Segment and Earth Station Handbook, by Bruce Elbert, is an updated and expanded
second edition reflects the state of earth station design and ground segment architecture. From international
telephone network gateways to direct broadcast home receivers, today's broad range of ground systems and devices
require satellite communication engineers and business managers to have a broad and sound understanding of the
design and operating principles of earth stations and...
Radio Frequency System
Frequency System Architecture and Design, by John W. M. Rogers, Calvin Plett, and Ian Marsland. Communication
devices such as smart phones, GPS systems, and Bluetooth, are now part of our daily lives more than ever before.
As our communication equipment becomes more sophisticated, so do the radios and other hardware required to enable
that technology. Common radio architectures are required to make this technology work seamlessly. This resource
describes practical aspects of radio frequency communications systems design...
Stimson's Introduction to Airborne Radar, 3rd Edition
Introduction to Airborne Radar, by Hugh D. Griffiths, Christopher Baker, and David Adamy. Has any technical
book, radar or otherwise, presented the fundamentals and applications of a topic with such clarity and interest
as George Stimson’s masterpiece has? Over 50,000 happy Stimson owners would say, "Not likely!" Now a skilled and
respected team of radar and EW engineers, working closely with a community of radar advisors and the publisher’s
editors, have fully modernized coverage and maintained the unique Stimson look and feel. Even the "timeless principles"
and core fundamentals of general radar have been updated...
